The FMSP has a commitment to provide Professional Development for mathematics teachers to help improve the range of extension and enrichment activities that students experience in order that they will consider undertaking further study in mathematics.
Events are provided free of charge to KS4 teachers from state-funded schools, colleges and academies.
This summer we will be running our popular Functions and Graphs course in various locations across the country. Please see our GCSE Higher Tier page for more details.
We would like to thank all those teachers who attended the KS4 E&E Conference this year in London. We would especially like to thank our plenary speakers, Charlie Stripp and Rob Eastaway and our workshop leaders.
We are expecting to run two Conferences in the Summer term of 2019 to support teachers in their professional practice.
In 2017-2018 we are planning to hold four three days courses across the country. This new course builds on the previous one day and two day courses and will focus on Reasoning, Extending and Problem Solving across KS3 and KS4. These courses cover new ideas so will be appropriate for people who have already attended the two-day course. Part of the course will expect participants to work with colleagues in their school and it may be appropriate for Heads of Department or Key Stage Leaders to consider this course.
Tailored to the secondary curriculum, this course aims to:
The course consists of three separate face-to-face professional development days with some online support between the three sessions.
Delegates have the chance to obtain and try out a wide range of materials targeted specifically at secondary school students. Materials have either been developed by the FMSP or are available from other sources. Teachers will also have opportunities to reflect on provision and pedagogy associated with the topics covered and to consider different ways in which individuals and groups can be appropriately challenged.
It is expected that delegates will have opportunities within their own schools to use a selection of the resources with students between the first two course dates.
Teachers will look at how colleagues can be supported in developing their professional practice and it is expect that delegates will have opportunities to work with colleagues in their schools between the second and third days of the course.
In 2017-2018 we are planning to hold about 18 courses across the country which target a number of the new Higher Tier objectives. These courses are the same as the courses in 2016-2017 so this is great opportunity for colleagues to attend the course if you have already participated!
The Further Mathematics Support Programme provides professional development and resources to support teachers in stretching and challenging Key Stage 4 students working towards the Higher Tier Mathematics GCSE (or equivalent).
Tailored to the new Higher GCSE, this course aims to:
The course consists of two separate face-to-face professional development days with some online support between the two sessions.
Delegates have the chance to obtain and try out a wide range of materials targeted specifically at Higher Tier GCSE students. Materials have either been developed by the FMSP or are freely available from other sources. The FMSP resources have been designed to consolidate understanding of some of the more challenging topics, to promote a deeper understanding of them and also to encourage students to recognise the links between and within topics. Teachers will also have opportunities to reflect on provision and pedagogy associated with Higher Tier GCSE students and to consider different ways in which individuals and groups can be appropriately challenged.
It is expected that delegates will have opportunities within their own schools to use a selection of the resources with students between the two course dates.
These courses are only for teachers working in state-funded schools, colleges and academies. Teachers attending the two-day course should be teaching at least one Key Stage 4 class. Up to two teachers per establishment can apply for the courses.
It is relevant for any teacher who wishes to develop their teaching, whether they are in the first years of their career or have longer experience. Ideally, teachers will also be in a position to disseminate the materials more widely within their departments; this is not a requirement of the two day course but is expected in the three day course.
These courses are funded by the DfE and are offered free of charge to teachers working in state-funded schools, colleges and academies. In addition, participants' schools will be eligible to claim £360 per teacher on the three day course and £240 per teacher on the two day course to enable attendance.

Applications for these courses are now closed.
