    Increase in numbers of girls taking Further Mathematics in Wales

    Further Mathematics A Level results are again a cause for celebration in Wales and many Welsh students will use their Further Mathematics A Level to enable them to study for a STEM degree. This year saw an impressive 20% increase in the number of Welsh girls taking a full A Level in Further Mathematics in comparison with 2015.

  • Welsh students are heading to read Mathematics in Cambridge University

    This pilot STEP 2&3 course organised by Gower College Swansea and the Further Mathematics Support programme (FMSP) Wales was a success, with two students accepted to read Mathematics in Cambridge University in 2015. Congratulations to Omkar Kamat from Bassaleg School and Jamie Dougherty from Gower College Swansea.

  • Further increase in numbers taking the Further Maths A-level in Wales

    This year’s Further Mathematics A-level results are again a cause for celebration in Wales. Both Mathematics and Further Mathematics results have built upon last year’s increased entry with further rises.

    The proportion of Mathematics students who sat Further Mathematics A-level reached 11.7%, which is the highest result ever in Further Mathematics in Wales

  • Swansea University hosts HEA Tackling Transition workshop

    Swansea University hosted a successful HEA Stem (MSOR) Event entitled Tackling Transition in Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research workshop held on Tuesday 25th March 2014.

    The successful event saw 21 delegates from Schools, Colleges and Higher Education Institutions from across Mid and South Wales working together to consider the problems and issues relating to the transition for students into Higher Education and to come up with innovative ideas that would help manage and improve the transition.

    Further 2 years funding announced for Further Mathematics Support Programme (FMSP) Wales

    In December 2013 the Welsh Government announced funding would be provided over two years for the continuation of the FMSP Wales. The significant annual funding of £225,000 would be made available in 2014-2015 and 2015-2016.

    Welsh Government Education Minister Huw Lewis said “We’ve made a commitment to improving levels of numeracy and enhancing the STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and mathematics”.” High level maths skills open doors to so many careers for our learners and we must support them to get the skills they need to succeed”.

    More pupils to benefit as Maths Programme extended with Welsh Government funding

    More pupils and students in Wales are to get support with Maths as the Further Maths Support Programme Wales has received funding from the Welsh Government to extend the project in the 2013/2014 academic year. The pilot Further Maths Support Programme Wales started in October 2010 and covered Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot, Swansea and Pembrokeshire but the increased funding will mean that Rhondda Cynon Taf and Anglesey and other parts of North Wales will be included in the project.

    This year’s both Mathematics and Further Mathematics results have built upon last year’s increased entry with further rises.

  • A level Further Mathematics numbers are up from 309 to 380, a 23% increase.
  • AS Further Mathematics numbers are up from 289 to 339, a 17.5% increase.
  • A level Mathematics numbers are up from 3375 to 3643, a 7.9% increase.
  • AS Mathematics numbers are up from 4448 to 4647, a 4.8% increase.

    This year’s Further Mathematics results are a real cause for celebration in Wales.

    The proportion of Mathematics students who sat Further Mathematics A-level reached 9.2%, which is the highest result ever and also the fastest annual growth in Further Mathematics in the last eight years. Compared with last year A-level Further Mathematics student numbers have increased by nearly 29% from 240 to 309.

    Cyrhaeddodd cyfran y myfyrwyr Mathemateg a safodd lefel A Mathemateg Bellach 11.7%, sef y canlyniad uchaf erioed mewn Mathemateg Bellach yng Nghymru.

    Gwelodd y digwyddiad llwyddiannus 21 o gynrychiolwyr o Ysgolion, Colegau a Sefydliadau Addysg Uwch ar draws Canolbarth a De Cymru yn gweithio gyda'i gilydd i ystyried y problemau a'r materion pontio sy’n codi i fyfyrwyr sy’n mynd i Addysg Uwch ac i ddod o hyd i syniadau dyfeisgar a fyddai'n helpu i reoli a gwella y cyfnod pontio.

  • Cyhoeddi 2 flynedd arall o gyllid ar gyfer Rhaglen Gymorth Mathemateg Pellach (FMSP) Cymru

    Ym mis Rhagfyr 2013 cyhoeddodd Llywodraeth Cymru y byddai cyllid yn cael ei ddarparu dros gyfnod o ddwy flynedd ar gyfer parhad FMSP Cymru. Bydd y cyllid blynyddol sylweddol o £225,000 ar gael yn 2014-2015 a 2015-2016.

    Dywedodd y Gweinidog Addysg Llywodraeth Cymru Huw Lewis "Rydym wedi gwneud ymrwymiad i wella lefelau rhifedd a gwella'r pynciau STEM - gwyddoniaeth, technoleg, peirianneg a mathemateg". "Mae lefel uchel o sgiliau mathemateg yn agor drysau i gynifer o yrfaoedd ar gyfer ein dysgwyr, ac mae'n rhaid i ni eu cefnogi i gael y sgiliau sydd eu hangen i lwyddo".

    Mae rhagor o ddisgyblion a myfyrwyr yng Nghymru yn mynd i gael cymorth gyda Mathemateg gan i Raglen Gymorth Mathemateg Bellach Cymru dderbyn cyllid gan Lywodraeth Cymru i ymestyn y prosiect yn y flwyddyn academaidd 2013/2014. Dechreuodd cynllun peilot Rhaglen Gymorth Mathemateg Bellach Cymru ym mis Hydref 2010 ac roedd yn cynnwys Sir Gaerfyrddin, Castell-nedd Port Talbot, Abertawe a Sir Benfro, ond bydd y cynnydd yn y cyllid yn golygu y bydd Rhondda Cynon Taf ac Ynys Môn a rhannau eraill o Ogledd Cymru yn cael eu cynnwys yn y prosiect.
