    Mathematics Tutors

    FMSP Wales is recruiting mathematics tutors to support Wales' brightest A-level mathematicians

    The Further Mathematics Support Programme Wales is looking for experienced and enthusiastic mathematics teachers, lecturers and postgraduate students with a passion for problem solving. These tutors will help develop and deliver an exciting new A-level Mathematics enrichment programme for Wales' most promising and ambitious mathematicians, in order to support their mathematical development and facilitate their preparation for university extension papers and tests, such as STEP and MAT. The tutors will be supporting small groups of students across Wales alongside the network of SEREN Hubs.

    Whom are we looking to recruit? Are you the type of person that loves nothing more than the challenge of an unusual maths problem? Would you like to work in an experienced team of likeminded individuals? Would you like to work with ambitious and highly motivated students, supporting their development as problem solvers?     SMITH'S REVIEW HIGHLIGHTS THE ROLE OF HEIs IN 16-18 MATHEMATICS PROVISION

    Summary:

    A recent review of mathematics education post-16 in England conducted by Sir Adrian Smith highlighted the role HEIs play in influencing the uptake of 16-18 mathematics qualifications as well as in offering support for schools and colleges. The report argues the need for universities to articulate their mathematics needs more widely. Many students arrive at universities with unrealistic expectations of mathematical content of their degrees courses. However, schools and colleges are heavily influenced by university entry requirements and thus the report suggests that universities “should better signal and recognise the value of level 3 mathematics qualifications for entry to undergraduate course with a significant quantitative element” (recommendation 4). The report also recognises the role HEI play in supporting mathematics teaching. Good examples include universities setting up a mathematics sixth form with strong emphasis on mathematics (King’s College London, University of Exeter) and developing teaching materials informed by academic research (Mathematics Education Centre in Loughborough University working with Further Maths Support Programme (FMSP), Underground Maths project by led by Cambridge University). The report highlights the impact of the FMSP on the provision for Further Mathematics as well as teacher professional development. FMSP, alongside with Isaac Physic MOOC for A-level teaching, are also mentioned as good examples of technology used to address capacity shortages. The report invites investigating into the role and effectiveness of technology in the teaching 16-18 mathematics and recommends funding online professional development resources.     This pilot STEP 2&3 course organised by Gower College Swansea and the Further Mathematics Support programme (FMSP) Wales was a success, with two students accepted to read Mathematics in Cambridge University in 2015.   • Swansea University hosts HEA Tackling Transition workshop

    Swansea University hosted a successful HEA Stem (MSOR) Event entitled Tackling Transition in Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research workshop held on Tuesday 25th March 2014.

    The successful event saw 21 delegates from Schools, Colleges and Higher Education Institutions from across Mid and South Wales working together to consider the problems and issues relating to the transition for students into Higher Education and to come up with innovative ideas that would help manage and improve the transition.

    Further 2 years funding announced for Further Mathematics Support Programme (FMSP) Wales

    In December 2013 the Welsh Government announced funding would be provided over two years for the continuation of the FMSP Wales. The significant annual funding of £225,000 would be made available in 2014-2015 and 2015-2016.

    Welsh Government Education Minister Huw Lewis said "We've made a commitment to improving levels of numeracy and enhancing the STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and mathematics"." High level maths skills open doors to so many careers for our learners and we must support them to get the skills they need to succeed".

    More pupils to benefit as Maths Programme extended with Welsh Government funding

    More pupils and students in Wales are to get support with Maths as the Further Maths Support Programme Wales has received funding from the Welsh Government to extend the project in the 2013/2014 academic year. The pilot Further Maths Support Programme Wales started in October 2010 and covered Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot, Swansea and Pembrokeshire but the increased funding will mean that Rhondda Cynon Taf and Anglesey and other parts of North Wales will be included in the project.

    This year's Further Mathematics results are a real cause for celebration in Wales.

    The proportion of Mathematics students who sat Further Mathematics A-level reached 9.2%, which is the highest result ever and also the fastest annual growth in Further Mathematics in the last eight years. Compared with last year A-level Further Mathematics student numbers have increased by nearly 29% from 240 to 309.

    Mae FMSP Cymru yn recriwtio tiwtoriaid mathemateg i gefnogi mathemategwyr lefel A mwyaf disglair Cymru

    Mae'r Rhaglen Gymorth Mathemateg Bellach Cymru yn chwilio am athrawon mathemateg darlithwyr a myfyrwyr ôl-raddedig profiadol a brwdfrydig, gydag angerdd am ddatrys problemau. Bydd rhain yn helpu i ddatblygu a chyflwyno rhaglen gyfoethogi Mathemateg Safon Uwch newydd cyffrous i fathemategwyr mwyaf addawol ac uchelgeisiol Cymru, er mwyn cefnogi eu datblygiad mathemategol a'u paratoi ar gyfer papurau a phrofion estyniad prifysgol fel STEP a MAT. Bydd y tiwtoriaid yn cefnogi grwpiau bach o fyfyrwyr ledled Cymru ochr yn ochr â'r rhwydwaith o Ganolfannau SEREN.

    Am bwy rydym yn chwilio i recriwtio? Ydych chi'r math o berson sy'n caru her o broblem mathemateg anarferol? A fyddech chi'n hoffi gweithio mewn tîm profiadol o unigolion o'r un meddylfryd? A fyddech chi'n hoffi gweithio gyda myfyrwyr uchelgeisiol sy'n llawn cymhelliant, yn cefnogi eu datblygiad fel datryswyr problemau? Os yw eich ateb yn gadarnhaol i'r cwestiynau hyn, yna efallai y byddwch yn y math o berson y hoffai Rhaglen Gymorth Mathemateg Bellach ei recriwtio. Rydym yn croesawu athrawon mathemateg Safon Uwch, darlithwyr SAU, mathemategwyr wedi ymddeol a myfyrwyr ôl-raddedig mathemateg.

    ADOLYGIAD SMITH YN AMLYGU ROL Y SAU MEWN DARPARIAETH MATHEMATEG 16-18

    Crynodeb

    Mae adolygiad diweddar o addysg mathemateg ôl-16 yn Lloegr a gynhaliwyd gan Syr Adrian Smith yn amlygu rôl y mae SAU yn ei chwarae wrth ddylanwadu ar y niferoedd sy’n cymryd cymwysterau mathemateg 16-18 yn ogystal â chynnig cefnogaeth i ysgolion a cholegau. Mae'r adroddiad yn dadlau bod angen i brifysgolion fynegi eu hanghenion mathemateg yn ehangach. Mae llawer o fyfyrwyr yn cyrraedd y brifysgol gyda disgwyliadau afrealistig o gynnwys mathemategol eu cwrs gradd. Fodd bynnag, mae anghenion mynediad prifysgol yn dylanwadu'n drwm ar ysgolion a cholegau ac felly mae'r adroddiad yn awgrymu y dylai prifysgolion "nodi a chydnabod gwerth cymwysterau mathemateg lefel 3 ar gyfer mynediad i gwrs israddedig yn well gydag elfen feintiol sylweddol" (argymhelliad 4).   • Cyhoeddi 2 flynedd arall o gyllid ar gyfer Rhaglen Gymorth Mathemateg Pellach (FMSP) Cymru

    Ym mis Rhagfyr 2013 cyhoeddodd Llywodraeth Cymru y byddai cyllid yn cael ei ddarparu dros gyfnod o ddwy flynedd ar gyfer parhad FMSP Cymru. Bydd y cyllid blynyddol sylweddol o £225,000 ar gael yn 2014-2015 a 2015-2016.

    Dywedodd y Gweinidog Addysg Llywodraeth Cymru Huw Lewis "Rydym wedi gwneud ymrwymiad i wella lefelau rhifedd a gwella'r pynciau STEM - gwyddoniaeth, technoleg, peirianneg a mathemateg". "Mae lefel uchel o sgiliau mathemateg yn agor drysau i gynifer o yrfaoedd ar gyfer ein dysgwyr, ac mae'n rhaid i ni eu cefnogi i gael y sgiliau sydd eu hangen i lwyddo".

  • Canlyniadau Mathemateg Bellach eleni yn achos dathlu go iawn yng Nghymru.

    Mae cyfran y myfyrwyr Mathemateg a safodd Mathemateg Bellach Safon Uwch wedi cyrraedd 9.2%, sef y canlyniad uchaf erioed a hefyd y twf blynyddol cyflymaf mewn Mathemateg Bellach yn yr wyth mlynedd diwethaf. O'i gymharu â'r llynedd mae nifer y myfyrwyr Mathemateg Bellach Safon Uwch wedi cynyddu bron i 29% o 240 i 309.
